Food waste has been in the news a lot over the past few days, highlighted by Tesco admitting how much of their food goes to waste. It seems the figure is 40% on some items such as apples and salad. We do waste food, I’m not saying we are perfect but I do try reduce food waste. I use chicken carcasses to make stock and left over meat from a Sunday roast in a rice dish for a mid-week meal.
I am also wary of buy one get one free deals. Often it is impossible to use the additional free item, unless it can be frozen and used later so I choose just to purchase one and not take advantage of the discount. Recently I am choosing what to cook for dinner based on what is in the fridge and am wasting less food. Our top waste products are lettuce and bread although the birds get the left over bread so although we might waste it, it doesn’t reach the compost bin.
